Position Summary:

As our Springfield, VA location grows, we're looking to bring on a new Meter Service Representative I. In this role, you’ll be out in the field each day reading gas meters across our service territory. You’ll handle a variety of assignments—like scatter reads, special reads, and gas light surveys—using a handheld device to collect accurate data. You’ll also install and inspect remote reading devices (ERTs), making sure everything is working properly. You’ll be responsible for making sure your daily routes are completed accurately and efficiently, and you’ll have the chance to suggest improvements to help streamline the process. This role involves driving (either a company or personal vehicle), working independently, and most importantly, helping ensure our customers and community stay safe and well-served.

What You'll Do:

• Receive meter reading books for assigned route.

• Operate FC300, hand-held computer or similar device.

• Operate hand-held computer to read meters and/or ERT, program and reprogram ERT or similar remote meter reading devices.

• Install, maintain and repair automated meter reading devices (ERT or similar).

• Use small hand tools to perform ERT maintenance.

• Verify route efficiencies and route order, special instructions for access, etc., and report necessary changes to supervisors (includes coding meter locations and special conditions).

• Read active and inactive meters on assigned route.

• Verify identification number of meter as well as High-Low failures.

• Report unsafe or unusual conditions to appropriate personnel (gas leaks, theft, illegal connections, etc.).

• Leave customer read card when unable to gain access to read, remove and/or install remote meter reading devices.

• Operate as needed company assigned vehicles or personal vehicles.

• Perform other duties as assigned:

In addition to the activities described above:

• May be assigned to related business support and administrative activities (ex. backend meter processing, backend corrosion processing, backend leak/damager prevention processing, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, cross functional training activities, etc.)

• Shift Work: Required

• Use of Personal Vehicle: Required

• Job is progressive to Meter Service Representative II.

What You Bring:

• High School Diploma/GED

• Meter Service Representative I - must pass a Criteria assessment and meter reader training tests.

• Valid driver's license

• *CDL HOLDERS ARE SUBJECT TO TESTING UNDER FEDERAL HIGHWAY REGULATIONS

• Ability to read and write legibly.

• Must know how to read a map to locate assignments in service territory.

• Knowledge of basic math.

• Must possess good verbal communication and customer service skills
