SCHEDULE: Full Time (Exempt). Monday–Friday; 9 am - 5 pm, Variable - Hybrid
SALARY: $97,344 annual
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Student Health and Counseling Services, the Registered Nurse will oversee the daily operations of the School of Visual Arts (SVA)-sponsored student health insurance plan and implement the requirements of the New York State Department of Health regarding Post Secondary Immunizations. The Registered Nurse will consult on issues regarding public health and college health response and coordination as it relates to communicable diseases. Also, practicing within the scope of an RN license will provide case management, health promotion, health coaching, and appropriate referrals to undergraduate and graduate students.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health Administration -
- Consult as needed regarding health and public health policies and procedures.
- Proactively keep informed about college health and public health issues.
- Actively participate in case meetings and other staff meetings.
- Maintain and develop appropriate community health referrals.
- Maintain accurate student health insurance and immunization records.
- Perform other job-related duties or special projects as assigned.
Student Health Insurance -
- Administer and oversee the daily management of the SVA-sponsored student health insurance plan.
- Actively disseminate information about the health insurance policy to students and their families.
- Assist students with understanding SVA student health insurance benefits, explanation of benefits, insurance eligibility, and the waiver process.
- Point of contact with vendors, students, and college administrators to ensure the health insurance program process is successful.
- Maintain positive working relations with University Health Plans (UHP) insurance brokers. Collaborate with UHP brokers to assist students with health and insurance-related inquiries.
- Collaborate with UHP brokers to host and facilitate orientation programming.
- Coordinate with and maintain positive working relations with all SVA departments, including the SVA Student Accounts team, Academic Departments Heads, and Colleague Computing Services to effectively coordinate insurance enrollment, insurance waivers, and late waiver appeals.
- Run reports and maintain accurate insurance rosters and submit weekly rosters to UHP.
- Reconcile health insurance rosters and invoices in the Fall, Spring, and Summer to ensure accuracy in the insurance enrollment process.
Immunization -
- Data entry, tracking, and management for all immunization information received.
- Educate and reach out to incoming students in order to assist them in becoming compliant with immunization requirements.
- Develop improved communication processes and mechanisms to establish 100% immunization compliance as per New York State requirements.
- Run immunization reports and serve as liaison to faculty, staff, students, and external agencies regarding procedures and expectations related to resolving compliance issues.
- Produce messaging for immunization requirements and registration holds when compliance is not met.
- Print and purge immunization records as needed.
Program Development -
- Create an offering of health promotion and awareness events to reach a diverse student artist community.
- Plan and participate in health-related student training and Orientation programs.
- Collaborate with staff to identify current student needs and how to best reach the student population. Develop and enhance programs to address those needs.
Patient Care -
- Assess students and make referrals based on their presenting problems.
- Provide health education and wellness coaching for students.
- Provide follow-up contact for students who have medically-related Incident Reports (STAR reports) filed.
- Maintain accurate records: documenting visits, calls, and emails with SOAP notes.
- Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care and increasing patient understanding of illness through teaching in a diverse clinical environment.
- Provide an integrative and holistic approach.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a current New York State RN license.
- Three years or more of related nursing and public health experience.
- Two years of experience working in higher education, healthcare administration, health program management, or managing healthcare benefit plans.
- Requires strong computer skills with knowledge of standard computer programs. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel) and Google Suite (Google Sheets) and have an aptitude for learning data entry processes and software systems.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Must hold an active, valid New York State Registered Professional Nurse License.
- Current valid cardiopulmonary (CPR) and first aid certifications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Public Health (MPH) degree preferred.
- Experience in College Health Nursing or with board certification in a related specialty area.
- Experience working with adolescents and/or a college student population.
- Experience with immunization tracking systems, data analysis, health compliance, or health insurance administration processes is highly desirable.
- Experience working with Ellucian Colleague or a similar higher education system is preferred.
- Professional fluency in a second or multiple languages is preferred.

- Knowledge in identifying health and medical needs and recommending appropriate care and services.

- Skill in operating a personal computer and proficiency in Microsoft and Google Suites, with an aptitude for learning data entry processes and software systems.
- Skill in exercising tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex, and confidential student issues and situations.
- Skill in assessment, communication, and assisting students with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Skill in planning, organizing, and problem solving.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication and conflict resolution.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing tasks.
- Ability to learn about special populations, which includes cultural diversity as well as artists' special concerns.
- Ability to work independently and proactively seek assistance.
- Ability to learn and proficiently utilize new technologies and software programs, including Business Objects, Ellucian Colleague, Soft Docs, etc.
- Ability to train others.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with all stakeholders, including students, families, diverse groups, and individuals, especially those in distress.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Full-time hybrid position - three (3) days on site and two (2) days working from home.
- Variable schedule - willingness to work outside designated office hours as needed for college and special events.
- While working remotely, will be required to maintain the same hours of work as would be performed in the office; follow the department's procedures in completing assigned job tasks; and be available during the employee's working hours via the departments established communication methods (i.e. Google chat, Slack, phone, etc.)
- Ability to use standard office equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, and move for prolonged periods during shifts
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate weight up to 50 lbs.
