Job Description

At Bancroft the Field Archaeologist will conduct on-site archaeological research, excavations, and surveys to support archaeological projects. This role involves applying scientific methods to uncover, document, and preserve artifacts, structures, and other cultural heritage materials. The Field Archaeologist works in various outdoor environments, conducting fieldwork while adhering to health and safety standards and ethical archaeological practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in archaeological excavations, including digging, screening, and analyzing soil samples to uncover and recover artifacts and cultural materials.
  • Perform archaeological surveys, monitoring, identifying and recording archaeological sites and features. Utilize GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and other mapping tools to document site locations and findings.
  • Catalog and document artifacts, features, and excavation data according to project protocols. Ensure accurate and organized field notes and records.
  • Collect and organize field data, ensuring proper storage, processing, and archiving of materials.
  • Work closely with senior archaeologists, project managers, and other field team members to achieve project goals. Contribute to written reports and presentations based on field findings.
  • Ensure that excavation methods prioritize the preservation of cultural materials and sites. Handle artifacts with care, using conservation methods where necessary.
  • Follow all legal, ethical, and environmental guidelines in fieldwork, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations regarding cultural heritage and site protection (NHPA, CEQA, NAGPRA).

 

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field is required. A master’s degree may be preferred for more senior positions.
  • Attended archeological field school
  • Previous field experience in archaeology is highly desirable, especially in excavation and survey work.
  • Familiarity with archaeological methods, including excavation techniques, survey methods, and site documentation.
  • Experience with GIS and mapping software is a plus.
  • Familiarity with artifact cataloging, photography, and field documentation practices.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Extensive travel to remote or rural field sites, sometimes requiring long periods of time away from home.
  • Physical demands include walking long distances, carrying equipment, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to outdoor environments, including rugged terrain, and potentially extreme temperatures.
  • Fieldwork can involve long hours, including early mornings, weekends, and occasional evening work.

Pay:

  • $27-38/hr. based on experience
